Categories: My Life, 282 wordsSend feedback • PermalinkLast night there was a lunar eclipse that was at 100% at approximately 10:05 pm EST. ES and I went to Piney Z Lake, a little city park hidden in the back of a residential subdivision full of houses that are too close together. The park is technically closed at dark, so there are no lights at all. It was very dark and all we had was a flashlight. We go to this lake all the time, however, so we're very familiar with the trails and stuff. There are little peninsulas of land that jut out into the lake and we went out on one of those to get open sky (our neighborhood is full of trees so it's hard to get a good look at the sky). This lake is awesome in the daytime, always full of cool water birds and alligators. It's quite a treasure for birdwatchers. We've seen anhingas, coots, griebes, wood ducks, ospreys, wood storks, ibises, great blue herons, different kinds of egrets, kingfishers, turkey vultures, various woodpeckers and hawks, many little birds that are hard to identify when they are fluttering around in the brush and many others. We checked our path with the flashlight, so we didn't step on any alligators, but one made a big splash jumping into the water as we got close to wherever it was sitting. Also, we used the flashlight to spot them in the water. Their eyes glow yellow in the dark when you shine a light on them, so they are easy to find, although you can't really see much besides the eyes. There were also tons of frogs croaking all over the lake. It was kind of cool and exciting.
